Hi Jofromde,
One alternative that I've heard is 'meloxicam' which is a liquid, given once a day and is supposed to have less side effects than Rimadyl. You might ask your vet about this.

As for aspirin, I have used this with no problems and it is often recommended at 325mg per 40 pounds of dog every 12 hours for pain relief, but I will leave that decision up to you. You have to do what you think is best.

Also try adding omega-3 fatty acids, flaxseed oil. It is great for joints and has been shown to reduce inflammation.

You may also consider heat, massage or hydro therapy. Any or all of these have been shown to be effective in these types of injuries. The hydrotherapy with keep the joint and muscles exercised without putting strain on it and massage will ease pain and keep the circulation up which will stimulate healing.

I hope I've helped. Let me know how your dog comes along.

As always, double check with your vet and do what you feel is best for your dog. You will know what is helping and what isn't. You know your dog best.

What is a good alternative to rimadyl? My dog has a cruciate ligament pull in her left knee. I've been advised that buffered aspirin is a NSAID and also can be dangerous. She is getting a glucosomine/chrondroitin supplement and duralactin daily.
